The build-up of abandoned cable in building spaces is a serious problem. A typical office suite has an average of 300 feet of voice and data cabling per employee. In a moderately sized suite of 20 employees, that equates to a possible 6000 feet of cable. As buildings age and tenants change, this cable may or may not be removed, leading to the potential for tens of thousands of feet of abandoned cable to collect over time in one suite alone. The amount that can build up in an entire building is staggering. Old cable and hardware not only prevents a business from running with full efficiency, it also poses a serious threat with regards to fire and both tenant and building health.

Simply put, abandoned cable is a liability. The removal of this cable, or "cable abatement", is now law, enforced by provincial governments across Canada and outlined in the National Electrical Code and Canada's National Fire Code. As such, it has become an important issue with landlords, as failure to comply with these codes can result in occupancy permits being withheld.
